Rocking horse

Toy
Home-made children’s toy

This rocking horse once delighted the four Royce children, who lived at nearby Corringle Farm in Greenough. Their father, Maxwell Howard Royce, was a practical man and spent hours fashioning this rocking horse for his children in the 1930s, using kangaroo skin as the horse’s coat and the cow hair as the mane and tail. You can just imagine his joy at watching his children sitting astride the rocking horse and galloping away in their imaginations on adventures over the countryside. The rocking horse was donated to the museum in 1978 and restored, during which the saddle was put on backwards!
